Theatre Design of Northern Stage

We didn’t want to end our 40th Birthday celebrations without a final fanfare! This specially commissioned exhibition features images and models from some of our most iconic stage sets, by five acclaimed theatre designers.

Spanning more than 15 years of work, this is the first public exhibition to highlight Northern Stage’s contribution to contemporary theatre design. Showcasing the creative practice of five designers, principally Neil Murray, Associate Director and Designer at Northern Stage since 1992, as well as Soutra Gilmour, Imogen Cloet, Naomi Dawson and Andrew Stephenson, who have all designed for Northern Stage.

Tracing their creative journey from drawing board to stage, the exhibition will include a variety of media including flatwork, scale models, sketchbooks, photography, film, installations and costumes.

Re-visit some of your favourite Northern Stage shows, from A Clockwork Orange to The Bloody Chamber, Son of Man to Rutherford & Son and plenty of Christmas classics like The Snow Queen, Beauty and the Beast and The Happy Prince. More than 20 shows are featured with costumes from many of them, including Miss Haversham’s dress from Great Expectations and the Jester from last year’s sell out The Prince and the Penguin.

A limited edition full colour catalogue will be produced to accompany the show, on sale throughout the exhibition at Northern Stage. Now there’s a perfect Christmas present for theatre fans.
